I always wanted it all. I wanted kids, to be with them as they grew….AND I wanted a business of my own and financial independence. I developed my business part time over a period of four years, and then my son was born.
I had this picture in my head of baby napping next to me as I grew my business to six figures and beyond. I envisioned routines and consistent bed times and a child who loved to play by himself while I worked.
Yeah, that didn’t happen.
I have a firecracker of a child who is active from the time he wakes up until the time he goes to bed…sometimes around 10 pm. And I adore him.
For the first year of parenthood, I fought hard. Gave it everything I’ve got. I tried different routines every week; working at night, working at nap time, working before he woke up. I did everything I could to prove that parenthood did not change my ability to work. Not a bit.
All the business pros I turned to for advice told me that I had to give up time with my son if I wanted to grow my business. And I refused. Over and over and over again. I couldn’t do it.
Miss his first smile? The first time he stood up? Not a chance.
Two things happened. First, I got really, really, really tired. And second, trying to balance parenting and business felt like I was doing a shitty job of both. I was too tired to be the fun and engaging mom I wanted to be, and my business was still scraping by. I became reactive and frustrated.
Where were the people to show me how to do both? Where were the people that grew their business AND made their children a priority? No one seemed to have an answer that worked for me.
Then I started listening to Dr. Shefali Tsabary, and I read her book The Awakened Family. I came to tears as I realized what I was modeling for my son was not the way I would want him to live out his career and his life.
I turned my experience coaching career-driven professionals on myself, and began with self-healing. Taking the time to heal my adrenals and relieve my anxiety by stabilizing my blood sugar was the first step.
I began to work with tools and strategies to process emotion. I started exercising. And I gave up late work nights to make sleep a consistent priority, and develop focus.
Most important, I accepted a long term approach to my business that gives space for my own well-being. I invest in my business daily, and I see it grow, but I let go of the instant success I had been fighting so hard for.
Parenting and growing a business is a process of constant learning, and I don’t think it will ever end.
What I do know, is that I want to play the long game. I want to enjoy the moments with my children, and I want to be looking ahead to what I’m building in my business. Above all, I want to be thriving and feeling healthy and vibrant through it all.
We welcomed our second child last year, and this time I’m investing in myself. Training my mind to think about what I need first. Knowing that my state of being is what changes everything.
